We live in what may feel like an ever expanding age in a string of endless ages. But I do not believe this to be the case because we tend to understand the movements of people and culture from a very finite and limited perspective, our own. This is one reason why God gave the prophets and apostles, whose testimony flows from the very life and witness of the Word himself, that we may have a glimpse into the heavenly perspective that even the angels long to see. As the Church calendar nears the end of the ordinary season, marking the end of the Christian calendar itself (which is simply a tool for telling the Christian story), we are encouraged as to how we should live in this age, the age of the Gospel. We are to encourage one another with one specific benefit for all who believe in Jesus Christ as the Lord of lords, King of kinds and Savior of sinners; all who have died in the Lord are at rest with him and shall return with him at the end of the age to share in the resurrection unto glory. As Paul says, let us encourage one another with these things! This sermon was preached by Clay Thompson at St Jude’s Anglican Church on Sunday, November 8th, 2020.
