Do you hear Bob Marley? “Don’t worry….about a thing…every little thing’s gonna be alright” (Three Little Birds by Bob Marley). I hear Two Face as he was holding Commissioner Gordon’s son hostage “Have you ever had to talk to the person you love most, tell them its going to be alright, when you know its not?” (Batman, The Dark Knight). Two Face had just lost Rachel, whom he loved deeply. We hear many versions of fatalistic optimism in our culture today and it is not unique to the modern age. In Romans 8:28, Paul encourages the Church in Rome with an assurance that for those who love God, all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose. But how does he know that? Because many of us have suffered terribly. How can such suffering be working together for our good? Frankly, it feels the opposite at times. This is a sermon for the weary; called by God but disoriented by a sin sick world. The truth is that Paul can say, “everything is going to be alright” because God is the one behind the guarantee.
